BEDPOSTED.COM – SOCIAL MEDIA ROADTEST

There seems to be a free online planner for everything these days – none more intriguing than Bedpost.com for which I recently received a invitation to trial their beta website. Pitched as “a personal web application that will give you some insight into your sex life” Bedpost had me intrigued to understand what sort of person or consumer might decide to track every living detail about this traditionally private part of their lives. Could it be more than a scoreboard for narcissistic frat boys?
Functionality:
At its simplist, Bedpost is a calendar database – the user enters details of each sexual encounter with the following details:
* date
* time
* partner
* rating (out of five)
* custom descriptive tags
Over time, should data be entered accurately, this database could yield fascinating insights into your life. Though the data is completely private and not to be shared, for the majority I would imagine it is still merely a narcissistic novelty. I am sure there are plans to set up alerts in to let you know when you’ve been “inactive” for a defined period of time, for example, and it makes perfect sense as a back-end into a dating site.
I can imagine there being health benefits for an individual with sexual issues that required them to be more cognitive in this regard.. or if you were a horse stud whose main occupation was procreation. However, for the large part I found the whole idea of viewing and analysing your own bedroom habits rather Orwellian.
