POWERSET LAUNCHES
Powerset, a much talked-about start up search engine has finally launched. It’s not really a search engine, as such, but a clever toolset that interprets natural language queries, and facts on a web page to radically change the way we consume information.
The first tool to be released searches Wikipedia articles. What’s makes it sexy is that rather than returning a relevant page, it can extract the information you’re seeking from numerous different pages. For example, a search “actors in reservoir dogs” will return the actual information in the search results, rather than a web page with the results.
A search for “Henry VIII” returns a box with “Factz” that have been extracted from myriad Wikipedia articles - giving you the information you need without going to the web page.
At the moment this is only running on Wikipedia, but as the technology expands into other areas, it may have big implications for search engine marketing. If users can get the information they are looking for without ever visiting your site, how do you monetise your content or convert users into customers?
