POLITICIANS USING DIGITAL

Politicians are increasing their digital interaction with voters.
Indian politicians are sending ‘vote me’ text messages to mobile phones, New Zealand politicians are setting up Facebook profiles, American campaigns use YouTube to broadcast far more creative messages than traditional top-down television ads from elections’ past, and of course, there was the Kevin07 campaign!

Some of these examples include: Obama’s music video on YouTube, which has had almost 6 million views to date, Kevin Rudd used the digital space to his advantage, even creating a MySpace page to speak to young Australians and John Key (NZ politician) created a Facebook page to relate to a younger crowd.

Insight: By using digital media to reach and inform young voters, and with the potential for such a wide reach audience instantly, politicians can get their message across far easier now more than ever. But, they may also be putting their campaigns at risk, as damaging online content can easily be created against them. You just have to weigh up the negatives with the positives to realise how much these channels are actually helping political campaigns.

How effective are these channels in political campaigns and how can they help your brand?
